At the Movies...

What have you seen lately that you like?

I haven't been to the movies in a few weeks, but the last film I saw was Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. It was great! Frances McDormand was wonderful as always but Amy Adams stole the show. I could watch her for hours--she is so much fun! A friend recommended I watch the movie Junebug, which she is also in, so when I found it for sale at Daedalus Books in Belvedere Square I bought it. Didn't fall in love with the movie, but loved Amy Adam's performance in it. She is one of those people who you can't help but watch!

The worst movie I saw lately was Vantage Point with Dennis Quaid and Matthew Fox. It was just terrible. Stay far far away!

A movie I am really looking forward to is Baby Mama with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. And--of course...the Sex and the City movie, out at the end of May!

Teeth and Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Saw two movies this weekend. One was at The Charles and it was the strange, hilarious independent movie TEETH. This movie takes the myth of the vagina dentata and imagines what would happen if a 15 year old girl suddenly realized she had one. It's hilarious, scary, disturbing, and a must-see.

Then on Sunday I went to Landmark Theaters down in Harbor East and saw the new Jud Apatow (Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin) produced movie called Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It is the story of a man who is dumped by his television star girlfriend. He attempts to forget her by going on a fancy vacation in Hawaii--but when he arrives at the resort, he finds her vacationing there with her British rocker boyfriend! I am always impressed at the consistent quality of everything put out under the Apatow banner. He's really rescued the romantic comedy genre from itself.

Don't see either of these movies if you have a delicate disposition!

Baraka

The movie Baraka will be screened this Saturday, April 26, 2:00-3:30 p.m. at the Senator Theater. The showing is free. Other events will take place at the Senator that day as part of the 12th Annual Belvedere SpringFest, an Earth Day Celebration. I wanted to highlight this movie, though. I have the DVD, but I love seeing it at the Senator when possible.

Here are some links about Baraka, check it out and enjoy the movie.

Young At Heart

I caught a sneak preview of Young At Heart at the Charles last night.  It is a documentary that follows a chorus of senior citizens who have toured the world with their age-unusual song choices.  These choir members are rockin' out to songs by James Brown, Coldplay, David Bowie, Sonic Youth and The Ramones!   It was a really wonderful film that demonstrated how music can keep you vital.  Some moments are hilarious and some are heart breaking.  There was not a dry eye in the house when the Young At Heart chorus visited a local detention center.  It was extremely powerful.  I would recommend this film to anyone.  It is a tribute to living.

I want to see this!

I saw a preview for this and I thought it looked great! Maybe I will check it out this weekend.

Film Festival?

Who is going to the 10th annual Maryland Film Festival and what are you going to see there?

I spent the evening last night sitting outdoors watching Yellow Submarine. It was wonderful!

Yellow Subs

I first saw Yellow Submarine in Greenwich Village in the long-ago days when it was a pretty rugged place.

Surrounded by stoners - an experience not to be forgotten.

Things I want to see

I have a list. Let me know if you have seen them and what you think!

-The Strangers. I look creepy rather than gory horror movies. I have heard good things about this one.

-Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford is adorable and makes me laugh.

-Sex and the City. Going on Sunday! Very excited!

Wall-E

I saw the new Pixar film Wall-E last week. It was wonderful! A very smart animation. It made me feel pretty terrible and hopeless though. Here is this beautiful film damning overconsumption and we're all sitting there with our jugs of soda and gigantic tubs of popcorn, living exactly what the movie is preaching against.

I also recently caught a bit of the film Happy Feet. Kids movies today are terrifying. I feel like these movies were safer when I was a kid. Now they seem so riddled with anxiety about the world. I asked my boyfriend's sister about it. Do these movies scare her kids? They scare me! She said mostly, they seem to ignore the message or the scary dire predictions in the movies.

Any parents want to weigh in?

The Dark Night and Mamma Mia

Has anyone seen the dark knight? I am seeing it tonight, looking forward to it!

Also really want to see Mamma Mia! I have read some bad reviews but I love ABBA and simply a chance to listen to ABBA is worth it!

Okay, I saw it at the

Okay, I saw it at the Senator, which was packed! As much as it rankles me to verify any "buzz" I have to admit, Heath Ledger gave a truly transcendent performance. If he does win an Oscar for it, yes it will be because his death convinced the Academy to look beyond their distaste for big budget action movies---but he WILL be deserving of it.

The action scenes were a little boring. They all start to run together.

The Visitor

I took my daughters to The Charles Saturday night to see The Visitor. It was very good. Both daughters also loved it although they had very different opinions on the subject of illegal aliens.

I was not familiar with any of the actors. No special effects, no big name actors, just fine acting and interesting subject matter.

I highly reccomend it.

Podcast

Did you know we did a podcast interview with the writer and director of that movie?
